Kid Command Mission Log… Commander Fitz

Day 763 in Gorfian Year of the Split Moons

Crew members: Teesha, Machui, Bella, Carlotta, Paws, and Kota

Today, one earth week into our galactic journey, we came upon a massive heap of what appeared to be rubbish floating in space. From a distance we could not identify it as a space craft. Was it the abandoned island of a rogue space pirate or pollution left behind from camping gypsies? Clearly it was magnetized because as we approached, we discovered it was a big hunk of materials – mainly metal - that appeared to be jammed together by an invisible force. Our team decided that the thing – whatever it was – looked empty so we planned to attach it to our booster rig and tow it to the nearest Astro-Recycler. But as Paws made an attempt to steer the booster rig’s mechanical arm toward the lump of trash, lights flickered on around the outer perimeter of the heap and two metal shields opened up like big eyelids to reveal windows…this was absolutely a space vehicle of some sort! Kota raised our Gorfian flag from the roof of our craft to send a signal of peace to whatever was inside. We waited anxiously…not knowing if the inhabitants of this odd-looking ship would try to cause us harm and derail our Kid Command mission…

Stay tuned...

Make Your Own Kid Command Reusable Sack!

Did you know that most families use approximately 1500 plastic grocery sacks each year? Sure you might recycle them within your home, but doesn’t it seem like they multiply more quickly than you can find uses for them? Eventually all these used sacks, which add up to an estimated 4 TRILLION, end up in our landfills and take many years to biodegrade. In some countries, you are charged a special tax for using a plastic grocery sack. In other countries the sacks are banned altogether since they are made from nonrenewable petroleum resources and utilize toxic chemicals in production. Using a canvas grocery sack is the best choice for our environment (not to mention…way cuter) and it’s just a matter of creating a new habit for yourself and your family.

If you want to help our environment but don’t know where to begin, make the commitment to use canvas grocery sacks this month. By month’s end, you will have created a brand new habit in your life…a habit that will inspire others…who will inspire others…who will inspire others. At Kid Command we believe that we all have the ability to make a difference! See you in the check out line!

This Month We Celebrate Mothers:
Our Mothers, Mother Earth & Mother Orangutans

Recently, the Kid Command team became aware of and amazed by the plight of mother orangutans in Indonesia. As rainforest habitats are burned and cleared for palm oil plantations, orangutan mamas are being killed in devastating numbers as they search for food for their babies. According to our friends at www.redape.org, “Orangutan mothers and babies have an incredibly close relationship…Their mothers teach them everything about survival in the forest before they set out on their own.”

Mama orangutans bond with their babies for a very long time, nursing them for up to seven years. “Their similarity to us is uncanny. Baby orangutans cry when they’re hungry, whimper when they’re hurt and smile at their mothers. They express emotions just like we do: joy, fear, anger, surprise… it’s all there.” We invite you and the children in your life to visit www.redapes.org and learn more about the amazing orangutan and the good work being done to protect this beautiful endangered animal.

Are You A Biophiliac? Researchers Say Yes!

Do love being outside as much as the Kid Command team? Seeing visually stunning landscapes may be more than a simple desire…researchers are learning that it is actually a calming tonic for our nerves, a condition being labeled biophilia. Whether you want to smooth away the rough spots from a chaotic day or begin your day on a peaceful note… turn off the TV, gather your kids around you, and chill out to these beautiful images. Do your own experiment…are you (or your children) more calm after watching this video gallery? This writer and her kids definitely were. Enjoy!

Think You Have a Long Commute?
Try Being a Monarch Butterfly…

Millions of monarch butterflies arrive back in the United States from their winter home in the mountainous regions of south-central Mexico each spring. This round trip journey adds up to an estimated six thousand miles…and yes, scientists have verified that it is the very same butterflies coming back to the states as the ones that originally embarked on the journey. No other insect makes this type of return migration!

To learn more about the beautiful monarch butterfly, why not invite them to your home? Monarchs love milkweed. Plant some on your patio or in your garden and watch closely. Monarchs passing through your area will be drawn to the milkweed, lay their eggs on them, and in about five days you will have tiny caterpillars (the black, white, and yellow kind). What a great opportunity to teach kids about the circle of life!
