Lincoln Children's Zoo

The Zoo is a great place to escape from the everyday and relax.

For almost 50 years, the Lincoln Children’s Zoo has provided Lincoln-area children with the opportunity to learn firsthand about the Zoo’s many special critters.

Our mission is to enrich lives through firsthand interaction with living things. We strive to provide our visitors with unique ways to connect with the natural environment and instill a love for the environment in young children.

The Lincoln Children’s Zoo is a treasure for Nebraska as it is one of only five zoos in the nation dedicated to educating our youth. The Zoo’s design is tailored specifically for children—providing viewing areas at a child’s height, animals that are within reach, and easy-to-read signs.

Numerous hands-on learning exhibits—such as Firsthand Farm and Critter Encounter—encourage children to touch the animals and ask questions of the staff. This one-on-one interaction makes lasting memories—and inspires children of all ages to not only care about nature, but to take action to protect our environment.

Isn’t it time you visit the Zoo?

Education

The Zoo’s goal is to provide the opportunity for everyone to experience firsthand the diversity that exists in the natural world and to promote a sense of stewardship and wonder about life. We believe this is possible through repeated, positive experiences with living things in a relaxed, enjoyable, and safe environment.

Our nine acres offer a variety of ways to connect children of all ages to the natural world. Young children can learn how to feed a goat, ride a pony, pet a rabbit or lure a butterfly onto a finger. They can get up close to the seals as they are trained by animal keepers and come eye to eye with a white-handed gibbon. They can play in the sandbox, learn to hop from stone to stone in the natural play space and run through the willow tunnel.

Older children can learn to excavate bones at Stego’s Big Dig, trade natural items at the Nature Exchange, or watch a bug buddy handle an African Brown millipede. If they’re brave enough they can even hold a hissing cockroach!
