MP Global

Green business that makes sense

Keep your home or business warm without harming the environment!

Our underlayment products are making the world a quieter and warmer place to live, one room at a time. Whether you want sound deadening or radiant floor heat, we’ve got the right product for the right reasons. Our high performance products are made with the environment in mind. These products can be recycled, and have minimal long-term effects on the environment. As contributors of clean indoor air, we give a whole new meaning to Green Peace.

One cannot fully appreciate the environmentally- friendly products of MP Global, without knowing a bit about the company and its leader. Al Collison is the owner and CEO of MP Global. Al spent 20 years in the cellulose insulation manufacturing business – making insulation from recycled paper – when he started his first company, Midwest Padding, in 1997. With recycled newspaper as his main raw material, Al developed Parco, Inc. (later becoming part of GreenStone) into the largest cellulose insulation company in the Midwest. He then helped build GreenStone - now GreenFiber - into the largest cellulose insulation manufacturer in North America.

While Al was aware of the environmental impact of his new venture, he began his company on basic economic principals, such as: find a need and fill it; use inexpensive raw materials; keep costs low; and sell quality products. The initial products manufactured by Midwest Padding (MP Global Products) were carpet padding, furniture parts, and mattress components. One of the first truly innovative products was QuietWalk®, an underlayment for laminate and floating wood flooring materials, produced in 1999. Two years later, Insulayment® was introduced as an underlayment for glued and nailed down wood floor and ceramic tile. Other sustainable products include QuietWarmth®, FiberBoard® and FiberBacker®.

The patented air-laid, low-melt technology employed by MP Global Products uses short recycled fibers from textiles that would otherwise end up in landfills. The binder fiber used in the process is even recycled from other industries.

Additional plant systems and procedures in place that add to the appeal of MP Global Products as a ‘sustainable’ company are as follows:

  • All electrical motors run on computer controlled variable frequency drives and thus, consume only the amount of energy necessary to run the plant.
  • Coolant systems are self-contained in enclosed loops so no wastewater is created.
  • A rotary drum filter house removes any airborne dust and collects it for reuse in the plant, emitting only clean air into the environment.
  • In-house trim pieces and out-of-spec products are reground (reopened) and reused.
  • Boxes used for shipping are made from 100% recycled materials.
  • Recycling programs are in place for incoming cardboard, metal bands, plastic bands, plastic covers, and waste oil (forklift, shag truck, and all gear boxes).

The products certified for recycled content are also recyclable. While there is no system in place to recapture end-of-life product and deliver it back to MP Global Products for reuse, the fiber content may allow for recycling through the existing carpet reclamation systems.

Products manufactured by MP Global Products are arguably the most sustainable in the flooring underlayment industry, not just because of the manufacturing process, material content, and certifications, but also because they have been truly “green” since they were first manufactured - not altered to enhance their environmental appeal.
